THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS
GP REFERRAL
If your medical condition affects your ability to drive safely, contact your GP and book a Fitness to Drive Assessment. If your GP identifies that your medical condition may affect your functional ability to drive, they will refer you for an OT Driving Assessment.
OFF-ROAD ASSESSMENT
An off-road (home or clinic-based) assessment is completed to identify your functional abilities to drive. This involves assessing your cognition, perception, motor skills, sensory processing, and driving behaviour.
ON-ROAD ASSESSMENT
The on-road assessment involves driving with the Occupational Therapist and Driving Instructor for one hour (in the driving instructor's dual-braking vehicle) to identify how your medical condition and the findings from the off-road assessment impact your ability to drive safely.
OT DRIVING ASSESSMENT OUTCOME REPORT
After your off-road and on-road driving assessment, a comprehensive report is provided to you, TfNSW, and your GP. The report is essential for communicating with TfNSW about your function and the impact of your medical condition on your ability to drive. TfNSW uses the report to make a final determination regarding your licence.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER KNOW YOUR ABILITY TO DRIVE
Southern OT acknowledges that driving a vehicle is a highly valued life skill because it provides independence and autonomy. When disability or illness affects driving, an assessment is required to identify the need for modifications, rehabilitation, or to cease driving.
