ASSESSMENT DETAILS
OFF-ROAD ASSESSMENT
A one to two-hour comprehensive assessment of your function, including your motor abilities (power, range of motion, reflexes, speed of movement, coordination), cognition (planning, problem-solving, memory, processing speed, judgement), visual perception and processing (interpretation of what you see), vision (acuity and visual fields), driving behaviour, and application of road rules.
ON-ROAD ASSESSMENT
A one-hour on-road driving assessment incorporating navigation of your local area, demonstration of your ability to control the car physically, the ability to process competing demands on the road such as other cars, pedestrians and hazards, reaction time for emergency braking, speed control, planning, judgement and driving behaviour.
DRIVER REHABILITATION
Driver rehabilitation is recommended when you demonstrate the functional ability to drive and the ability to learn; however, you need more driving experience to refine your skills to drive safely in accordance with TfNSW guidelines. This may involve lessons with a rehabilitation driving instructor to improve vehicle positioning and control and/or acquisition of vehicle modifications (e.g. hand controls, spinner knob, left foot accelerator) to compensate for changes in motor control.
WHY YOU MAY REQUIRE AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY DRIVING ASSESSMENT?
In NSW, you are required to notify Transport for NSW (TfNSW) of a medical condition or recent surgery affecting your ability to drive safely. TfNSW may ask you to take a Fitness-to-Drive medical assessment with your General Practitioner (GP). Your GP will advise TfNSW on how you meet the appropriate medical standards and TfNSW will make the final decision about your licence. To determine your driving capacity, your GP or TfNSW may require further evidence of your functional abilities. As such, they may request an OT Driving Assessment to investigate if you have the functional capacity to drive, looking at each driving component (cognition, perception, vision, motor, sensory) and how it impacts driving. The OT Driving Assessment is important because it empowers you to know where modifications and rehabilitation can be employed or if driving ceases.
